Mimi’s studio was an empty room at the top of a shopping mall. The El Corte Ingles on Plaça de Catalunya was a smooth curve in a plaza full of tall, rectangular buildings. It was also famous for having a spectacular view of La Rambla, a tree-lined boulevard that had small kiosk shops and was great for walking around in.

“This is incredible,” Luis commented, heading straight for the huge windows. The studio was bright and airy, with clothes and boots of different styles and colors strewn about. Mimi’s easel was set up by the window for the most natural light, and it looked like she was already making studies of ¿A Do…Va la Nave? A couch took up one side of the studio, a kitchenette with a working plumbing system took the other. “The view alone makes it worth it.”

“She told me she wanted it because the food court downstairs serves amazing sangria,” Cora commented, closing the door behind her as Luis placed the case near the easel, against the wall. She moved through the studio and bent over by the case, pulling out the painting and placing it on the easel. Then she stepped back and tilted her head, as if she had been the one who had painted it.

“How is Mimi going to strip this?” Luis asked.

“Acetone, rectified petroleum, and a bit of bleach to fight the yellowing on the sizing,” she said methodically. “Jin is very knowledgeable in these kinds of things, and Mimi is skilled. They can pull it off easily. In two weeks’ time, we’ll have a copy of ¿A Do…Va la Nave? so good, it will take months for anyone to realize we made the switch.”

“How long did it take for you to come up with this plan?” Luis asked. “This whole scheme?”

“A month. You get bored when you’re packing relief goods.”

“Cora.”

“Fine. I felt helpless. Powerless. Coming up with this was the only way I could keep a firm grasp of reality.” She touched the old paint gently, reverent even if she knew it was about to be violently removed tomorrow. “Like I said, I know how to do this, and do it well.”

“I believe you. You’re the only person I know who can pull off something like this. Well. Aside from the grandmother that stole from the Louvre.”

“And she was never caught. You’re not going to talk me out of it?”

“No,” he finally decided. “It’s not my place. And besides, you would never listen to me.”

“I wouldn’t,” she agreed, turning to give him a little smile. Luis was drawn to that smile. It would be so easy to reach out and touch her, run his finger over her lush bottom lip, and kiss it sweetly, softly. If Luis had the privilege of kissing Cora, he didn’t want to let himself forget it.

He touched her wrist lightly, and she turned, her mouth parted slightly as she looked at him in surprise. He’d never seen anyone so skittish about affection, but then again, he realized, he never had a reason to try anything affectionate with Cora before.
